Palo Santo is a wonderful tool to use to clear energy within your home or on yourself. It's used as an alternative to smudging with smudge wands. Here’s a bit more about this magical tool which is also known as ‘Holy Wood’.
The use of Palo Santo as a smudging tool to clear negative energy has slowly started to become more popular as people take note of its benefits. It’s a magical type of wood that has a beautiful, relaxing natural fragrance and its energy feels old and wise when you're in its presence.
Palo Santo is a wild tree that is native to Peru and Venezuela. It now grows in other parts of the world which have dry tropical forests and belongs to the same family as frankincense and myrrh which are also regarded as highly spiritual scents.
The Palo Santo tree was listed as being in critical danger by the government of Peru in 2006, but it was removed from this list in 2014 and is now considered to be ‘stable’. The Palo Santo tree is still being logged and cut down illegally in Peru which is why it is important to make sure that you buy Palo Santo products or wood that has been ethically sourced from naturally fallen branches, dead trees or the fruit of the tree. The Palo Santo that we stock has been ethically sourced and goes through ultra-violet treatment when it is brought into New Zealand.
Palo Santo has been used for centuries in burning stick form, resin and oil. At The Channelling, we promote its use for smudging purposes and in our energy room sprays, but Palo Santo oil and resin also hold the same amazing benefits.
The most notable effect of burning Palo Santo is its ability to produce tranquility and calm in your space. It clears stagnant and negative energy very well and is a quick-use alternative to smudging. The oil is usually used in aromatherapy treatments and applied directly to the skin to treat pain while the resin is used as an incense.
Traditionally, Palo Santo was used by the Incas to get rid of bad energy and to bring good luck to the user. It was also used in ancient medicine to treat arthritis and stomach aches. Nowadays its medicinal properties extended to repelling mosquitos due to its limonene composition, to relieve pain from arthritis, headaches and throat issues and it also has a stress-reducing effect. As with all types of natural medicine, it is ideal to patch test oils and avoid use when pregnant. When using Palo Santo in smudging form it can worsen symptoms of breathing problems due to the smoke it emits, so care must be taken.
Palo Santo is incredibly easy to use. Simply light one end of the stick, wave it around a room or yourself for as long as you wish and then be sure to extinguish it afterwards. You can avoid burning embers from falling to the floor by holding a smudging dish underneath the Palo Santo stick while it’s in use.
Enjoy using this beautiful Holy Wood. It is truly a magical tool!
